This research article explores the impact of Artificial intelligence (AI) on employment in India, and argues for the need for new policy interventions to address this change. With the increasing use of technologies such as robotic process automation (RPA), machine learning and cognitive analytics, AI is emerging as a dominant technology which is likely to have a profound impact on the world of work. Its rapid adoption across industries in IT as well as non IT sectors such as manufacturing, banking and finance, healthcare, logistics, retail and public administration in India is changing the employment dynamics. On the other hand, the technology promotes more productivity, better efficiency and greater innovation, while on the other hand, it also generates negative effects, including replacement of workers, skills mismatch and rising income inequality. This paper is a literature review that tries to identify and synthesise the impact of AI on employment in India. It draws from a vast number of secondary data resources including policy reports, industry studies and academic research studies.
