Abstract :

Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have reignited discussions surrounding consciousness and its theoretical foundations, prompting scholars to examine whether and how current AI systems might achieve forms of awareness or understanding. This review critically explores leading con- sciousness theories—such as Global Workspace Theory (GWT), Integrated Information Theory (IIT), and Higher-Order Thought (HOT)—to identify specific insights that may inform the next generation of AI design. By assessing the conceptual overlap between these scientific and philosophical perspectives, we high- light both the opportunities and limitations of applying them to AI, focusing on emergent properties, explainability, and potential tests for machine consciousness. Moreover, we introduce a novel framework for constructing “conceptual bridges” that connect consciousness research to practical AI development, underscoring the importance of a multidisciplinary approach that integrates cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and computer science. Our analysis illuminates the ethical and technical implications of AI systems approaching consciousness-like states. Ultimately, this review seeks to refine our understanding of the role consciousness theories may play in guiding AI’s future trajectory and ethical stewardship.
